Real Estate Consulting

When I got my real estate license, my oldest and dearest friend said —

“Before it comes up, I want you to know that I’m not going to hire you to be my real estate agent. I know about thirty agents, including my own mother, and if I picked any one of them, it would make the other twenty-nine mad, so I’m not hiring any of you. I’ll hire someone nobody’s heard of and who isn’t one of the crowd. That way, I can push them as hard as I need to and get as mad at them as I feel and even fire them if I want, and I won’t be risking a relationship or ruining Thanksgiving.”

No kidding – he really did say that.

I’ll bet you know a bunch of realtors, too. You might even be related to one or two. And each of them expects you to hire them when you’re ready to buy or sell property, right? And you probably dread that conversation. Or maybe you just feel flat-out obligated to use that person, no questions asked. So with all that peer pressure, you probably never even get to the point where you consider which of them is actually best-suited for your particular situation. But, seriously, would you hire a patent attorney to defend you in a murder case? Or a dermatologist to perform your neurosurgery?

Nope, not even if you were related. But that’s what you’re doing when you hire a real estate agent just because you know them. You don’t get the best expert for your location or property type or financial situation or even for your left-brained or right-brained personality! But you might be getting a big headache and a boatload of regret. So I have an idea.

Today, I am living in Atlanta, but I was raised in New Orleans & Birmingham and lived the last thirty years in New York City, Houston & Galveston. I was the Operating Principal of Keller Williams Galveston — a real estate company with national reach — and have been a mega agent, coach & certified trainer. I’ve got solid professional relationships across the country — agents of every shape and size with myriad specialties — and I want to leverage all that to benefit my friends, family, neighbors, and clients. (That’s you.)

So here’s what I’m going to do: When you are ready to buy or sell anywhere in the U.S. or Mexico, call me. I will visit with you about your motivations and dreams and requirements, then I will recommend one or more agents who I believe will do the best job for your specific circumstance. It may be me, and it may not be. We’ll decide that together. And while it won’t cost you a thing, it will very likely save you a bundle on the other end, in cash and drama.

Finally, apart from getting your ideal agent and a personal consultant to back you up (me), you’ll also have a built-in excuse to your realtor friends & relatives: “I’m not using any of you because I want to protect our relationship,” just like my friend told me. Because you know what? It worked.

I hope you’ll remember my idea when you’re thinking of buying or selling. Email me at alice@alicemelott.com or call me directly on my cell phone at 404-333-1198. We’ll visit confidentially, talk about the market and your situation, then decide what or who is best for you.

  1. As a ptofessional Real Estate Internet Marketing professional serving agents across the country I can tell you, and anyone else reading this that you are the real deal, and I have never even met you.

What you just said in this article places service first. Not business but, service, and just for the record you are 100% correct, hiring friends and family to become your agent out of a pool of Realtors that you know can be a nightmare waiting to happen.

When I sold my Grandparents home in Northern, NY 10 years ago my extended family loved all of the upgrades I had done, they loved what I had done and given that my cousin had taken on the family business I used her as the agent but, quickly learned that instead of sticking by the morals and values that had been attached to that business for decades at that point all it had quickly become was a convenient way to make money. There was no “fighting” for her clients, there was no “negotiating”, there was no “honesty, integrity, and character” attached to anything she was doing and what I found myself doing was all of the listing descriptions, photos, and marketing of the property until it sold. Where would the commission she would get actually come from because she hadnt done anything to actually warrant the receipt of one, and yet here I was 21, and just starting out in business and getting ready to move to Atlanta myself.

10 years later I can be honest and say nothing has changed. While she is still in business she has lost all respect of the community, she has destroyed the name, and values that my Grandfather had worked so hard to build, and it’s at least a weekly occurance if not more frequently when I find myself with a facebook private message saying something to the degree of “she burned me too or she has done it again.”

Come on we are talking about a woman here who has a tag line of Trust Loyalty and Commitment but, never paid me a dime for her website, seo or, any of the constant listing – closing table work that I found myself constantly doing and that her own agents were noticing that I was getting beyond burned on in the name of the family business.

Everything I did wasnt for her, the way I see it, all of that work was to honor my Grandfather and everything he had built as a developer, builder, investor, and broker.

Home Buyers and Sellers need someone who will 1) Be honest with them. 2) Fight for them. 3) Look out for them. 4) Consult, guide, and direct them. And 5) In home sales actually Do the work required, and List and Market their properties with tools and resources that are right at the tip of their fingertips. But you are going above and beyond that and I applaud you for it because it is a rare day when I see agents (even the countless that I market for) take this path, and utilize their network and connections to the degree that you are.

Kudos and Best Wishes from one Real estate field professional to a Realtor who is clearly in this for more than just the money.
